KHMER MUN

Before the end of the 6th year end, I was joining Model United Nations, MUN and it was in Khmer language.  It was my first time for being the delegate and participant in the MUN conference.  I was the delegate of Brazil and we are debating on a topic called “Biological Weapons of Mass Destruction.”

Honorable chairs, fellow delegates, and distinguished guests. Brazil is delighted to be present at such an important conference. Brazil recognizes the importance of disarmament of nuclear weapons and believes that the number of nuclear weapons should be controlled. As seen in most of the points communicated through the two treaties. Brazil has signed both the NPT and the CTBT but has still not ratified the CTBT. Brazil has been accused of creating and owning nuclear weapons since it has six largest reserves of enriched uranium in the in the world, but Brazil would like to inform all the members of the United Nations that it is not true that Brazil owns nuclear weapons. Brazil does allow IAEA inspections within the country as long as they are scheduled. This is simply because Brazil wishes to maintain its national sovereignty. The delegate of Brazil hopes this conference to be cultivated and productive and a positive outcome. Thank you!

CREATIVE WRITING

Stiles is living with his father in a mansion with their luxury life. He gets what he wants from his young, gorgeous 34 years old single father, Derek. Derek would tell stories about his mother every single night just put Stiles to sleep. At the age of 16, Stiles is going on a solo trip to Greece. Derek is all alone for years and he encourages Stiles to live on his own and have his own family. Derek suggestion was rejected by his own son. Stiles decided to go back to live with his father and he saw Lydia sitting a $500K couch reading Complex Magazine with Justin Bieber on the cover. Everything is changing after Stiles met Lydia.

ATHENA – GREEK GODDESS OF WISDOM AND WAR

Greek mythology is the body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient Greeks, concerning their gods and heroes. Gods and goddesses were the most powerful people in Greek mythology.

Athena, also known as Athene, is a very important goddess of many things, such as goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law, and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill.

Athena was born after Zeus realized that his head was about to explode. Zeus ate his pregnant wife and gave birth to Athena from his head. At the second she was born she was perfectly born as a grown-up woman with armor and weapons. She was a child that is more powerful than him because of a prophecy. She has no mother, but one of the most familiar stories about Metis, her mother inside Zeus body was the goddess of crafty thought and wisdom. One of the biggest mistakes she made was killing Pallas, one of her best friends during the mock fight.

Athena’s siblings were Artemis, Aphrodite, the Muses, the Graces, Ares, Apollo, Dionysus, Hebe, Hermes, Heracles, Helen of Troy, Hephaestus, Minos, Perseus, and Porus. She was Zeus favorite child of all. Athena was allowed to use his weapons including his thunderbolt. Zeus wants her to marry one of the gods, so she could have more power and stronger, but Athena refused and told her father she would never get married.

Athena and Poseidon, the god of the sea found a city and there’s only one of the god can own it. Zeus decided that they should have a competition, the winner own the city. Poseidon used his trident to create a river, but it’s salty. The villagers can’t do anything with salt water. Athena planted olive tree and she told villagers that they can use for food, shelter, firewood, decoration, ect. Villagers love her present much more than salt water, so they chose Athena to be the protectress of the city.

Athena was very smart and powerful when it comes to war. She was the peacemaker, which is weird because it’s connected to war. Her weakness was she didn’t show any emotion and especially around men. Parthenon temple is Athena’s temple, one of the greatest wonders of the world. She also invented flute, trumpet, chariot, bridle, pot, rake, the plow, yoke, and ship.

The symbols of Athena are owls, olive trees, snakes, aegis, armor, helmets, spears, gorgoneion. The owls were Athena symbol because an owl sat on her blind side so that she could see the whole truth. The olive tree or branch is standing for peace. The Aegis is the protective power and the protective shield. Snakes are creative power and wisdom.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE

I never ever think or feel that I like to play sports. I tried to play soccer, volleyball, floor hockey and even basketball. They are not my interest until I tried to play a sport called “frisbee.”

The first time I play frisbee, I played with boys and girls and I was the new girl of the team. The first couple of months of playing frisbee, I did not make a lot of progress because I was too scared to raise my voice. My goal in frisbee is to have someone call my name when they have a disc in their hand and willing to throw it to me.

After it’s been around a year, one guy that I never thought he would inspire me that much. I do not even think that he wants girls to play frisbee with him and I was wrong. He told me that to be strong in sport, he increases my passionate in sport, frisbee. He gives me countless opportunities to archive my goal in frisbee. I made a lot of progress during that time and I feel super duper proud of myself, not to be humble, but I was proud.

That guy was my frisbee coach, not surprising to you guys that coaches encourage students to work hard, but I do. Because of I rarely work with guy coaches.

He told me “Let your passion change the world, not the world change your passion!”

His quote inspires me every day and makes me reach for my passion.

GENDER EQUITY EXPLORATION

Gender equity is one of the biggest issues in the global, we must take the action. My exploration named Change Gender Equity and Change stands for Creating Humanitarian Awareness for the Nesassarary of Gender Equity. Our mission is to raise awareness about global gender issues with a focus on Cambodian society. In order to affect positive change, we must examine the past to transform the future. Through communication, passion, and risk-taking we will investigate various aspects of gender discrimination and inequalities by sharing stories, exchanging knowledge, and interacting with others to create a healthy and constructive dialogue about gender equity.

I learn about the difference between equality and equity. Equality is treating everyone the same. Equality is fairness and it only works when people need the same help. Equity is providing help in order to make them successful. Equity seems to be unfair, but it actually it tries to move everyone as close to the success as possible. But in society, everyone starts at different places and don’t have the same need so equity would be fit in this circumstance. My favorite part of the exploration is to learn about the stereotype. In the society, the stereotype is everywhere and anywhere. The stereotype is people perspective on someone or something.

Over the past seven weeks, a group of twelve students and two facilitators at Liger Leadership Academy have investigated a variety of topics related to gender as part of an exploration entitled “Gender Equity.” As our final product, we decided to organize a gender summit to raise awareness and create the dialogue about these very important global issues. Our summit will take place over two days, January 27th and 28th and will be conducted in both English and Khmer. We have invited high school age students from around the country to attend this event. Stay tuned for our gallery of student work, photographs, and interviews from the summit.

KHMER POEM | MOTHER

Things are getting interesting in Khmer Class. I was trying to write poems for the whole the past month (November 2017) because my Khmer teacher said so. I finished four poems and they were about, Banteay Meanchey Province, Perfect Husband, Teacher Sokha (My Khmer Teacher) and about my mother. My favorite one so far is about my mother. I tried to describe every single situation that she had been plus she’s one of my biggest inspirations.

English version

She’s tired and hot just because to build the education for her children. She’s famishing and her body was drained and she doesn’t want to buy any food for herself because she wants to keep all of that money for her children.

The women who meant a lot to me and she’s taking all of the pressure just because of her kids. She tries to every single way in every single situation to find cash to support the family. She doesn’t care that her life is about to burst into death.

No one knows that she’s sick, she’s taking another pressure of her sickness. No one knows that she sleeps on the mat and no one is taking care of her.

She wants her kids to be good like others, therefore she must work harder and harder, even though she sick.

After I know that I will try harder in school, so she doesn’t have to misgive about me.

My mother is one of the girls, who always believe in me and make me move forward without wasting any of my time.  I will do it because of her.

Study hard is the candle to light up my life and I’m the only person that I can depend on.

My mother used to tell me that if I can’t focus on school, I can think of her because she’s my inspiration.

Dear mother, I am sorry for all of the mistakes I’ve made. I will try to fix it and do good things while I’m young.

I really really want to say thank you to my parents, especially my mother. I’m trying to show what I mean from the inside of me by this poem.

TED TALKS

The United Nations has predicted that by 2050, a little over thirty years from now, there will be 9.7 billion people on this planet. With nearly 10 billion people consuming non-renewable resources, we must be thinking about the future.

I recently learned about a Native American group called the Iroquois that practice Seven Generation Sustainability; this concept focuses on future generations. The Iroquois believe the current generation of humans should be living and working in a way that will benefit their children as well as the next six generations after them. Can you say that you live and work each day for those children? Again, we must be thinking about the future.

That was the hook of my TED Talks. The theme of TED Talks in 2017 was “Creating a Hopeful Future” and it was my first time to join TED Talks. I was talking about solar energy. I felt so frantic for 2 hours before I gave a speech. My heart was jumping around like there was a trampoline inside my chest, I could hear my heartbeat and it was so loud inside my head and I thought the heart must burst.

When the time came, which means that it’s my turn to give a speech. I talked words by word while my mind is agitation. Not going to lie, I mess up some of my speech, but I feel like “MOM I MADE IT!!”

After that, it was so fun and I was inspired by a lot of speakers, especially technologies. I felt like I would like to join TED Talks for next year and talk about “Perfection” because it came into my mind after the event.

MATH

Sometimes I feel like I like math and sometimes I don’t and I don’t know why too. I learn math by using books and websites. I try to do a lot of math works so I could say that math is my passion, but it takes so long, nevertheless I’m in the process of it. Currently (2017 – 2018) I study dimensions math common core 7B book and my favorite chapters is linear graphs and inequalities. Basically, is you are solving for the variable (x).

Examples: Emilio can buy x books at $5 each with $26. Then the total cost of the books bought must not exceed $26. Thus $3x is less than $26. Mathematically we write

5x < 26

we call “3x < 26” an inequality. It is a linear inequality with one variable x. all values of x that satisfy the inequality are called the solutions of the inequality.

What are the values of x that will satisfy the above inequality? By inspection,

5 x 1 = 5 < 26, 5 x 2 = 10 < 26, 5 x 3 = 15 < 26, 5 x 4 = 20 < 26, 5 x 5 = 25 < 26, 5 x 6 = 30 > 26

Therefore, x 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are solutions of the inequality 5x < 26 but x = 6 is not a solution.

So Emilio can buy either 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 books.

PCHUM BEN DAY

In Khmer Literacy, I am studying listening, writing, speaking and reading skills in the Khmer language. In this class, we also learn about Cambodian culture. My most favorite part of the Khmer Literacy is when the teacher told me to do research about Pchum Ben Day. Pchum Ben means people gather together in a meeting or a pile of round sticky rice (size about your big toe). The goal of Pchum Ben is to bring food and bless the good luck to people who already pass out. People in the family also make Num Orn Sorm (Cambodian sticky rice cake)  for eating and taking to the pagoda for monks and relative already pass away. The event is happening for 15 days from first of October to 15th of October.

ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

In the Ecosystem Services and Climate Change Exploration, we worked with Song Saa Foundation to focus on three main areas: organic gardening, lightning prevention and protection and a fish population survey. We went to two different communities on Koh Rong which is located, offshore of Preah Sihanouk province, to do a workshop and conduct a fish population survey. The data will be analyzed to see which fish species are being depleted, according to the elders.  The workshop focused on safety from lightning since lightning is increasing with climate change. We also spent an afternoon building a fence at Sala Song Saa and prepared for an organic garden for Prek Svay community. Moreover, we distributed over a hundred water filters to the community at Prek Svay. Lastly, we snorkeled over coral reefs, through seagrass beds, and with bioluminescence. Thank you to Palm Beach Resort for providing us camping space, and providing us a night boat ride to swim with the bioluminescence.
